DiscoVeretoLeucantica Project

Community Archaeology

DiscoVereto is a community archaeology project: it is not limited to excavating the site and studying the finds, but aims to share questions, methods and results with the community, raising awareness of heritage protection and encouraging active participation in the informed enhancement of our shared heritage.

Public meetings, workshops, site visits and participatory science activities (citizen science) help residents, students and visitors to understand the social role of archaeology: how an area is chosen, how a layer is recognised, how a fragment is interpreted or a landscape is read.

This approach is in keeping with the spirit of the Faro Convention: cultural heritage is not merely something to be preserved, but a resource for communities. Vereto thus becomes an open laboratory between research, protection and participation.

The project enhances an area that has long been investigated only intermittently and places it in a Mediterranean perspective, building an open and inclusive model of research in which the memory of the Capo di Leuca becomes an active part of knowledge and protection.
